We rolled in on Friday morning, with Toby Lilja pressed into service in our crew. Eliot & Toby started out re-measuring and re-squaring everything. I spent the morning picking up our lumber because the lumberyard lost track of our gate code. I had left materials for a scrap-wood bench, which Siggy got built right away:
Our birds nest was empty, with a couple blue shells found some distance away. Either we have new birds to work on our mosquitos, or someone had an omelette.
Besides measure, Toby built and shot a bow and arrow.
Christina brought up a great picnic lunch.
This squirrel spent a bunch of time running in and around our worksite.
Toby helped drill some sill plates.
My mom came up and hung out with Guinivere on our benches.
Toby helped Siggy with a side project.
Guinivere took out the trash!
Bolting in an end stud for the pony wall.
We got our posts dialed in nice and level.
Anchor bolting the pony wall sills.
Sunday
We discovered the joy of a palm nailer. This neat little air-powered tool is faster than swinging a hammer, works in tight spaces, and can place nails into metal brackets where our nail gun can't. It makes a satisfying zip sound.
Siobhan explored the woods.
Christina mudded and primed the little cabin.
Siggy helped haul studs to the saw and into the foundation.
The walls went up pretty fast.
Dick and Jessica spent the day driving to Moses Lake to retrieve this 30' aerial work platform that we'll need when the house gets taller. It was great to have it just appear!
Jon & Eliot rode Siobhan's teeter-totter.
Finishing up the sheathing for the pony walls.
Our first layer of wood is finally installed. There is now a nice mostly-flat plane defined by the sill plates on top of the concrete stem wall, the tops of the pony walls, and the beam that crosses the "deep end" of the crawlspace.
I think we're ready for joists!
Jon serviced his own dang potty.
