Today's job was finishing the subfloor for the upstairs bedrooms. Today's guest carpenter was Analilia, whom Eliot knows as a coworker from Rain City Burgers.
Meanwhile my mom drove the bracket on the left to Marysville, where a welding shop turned it into the bracket on the right.
We got the subfloor wrapped up around dusk.
Jon got the 4x10 blocking cut and partially installed. Eliot & Ana slapped a little varnish on them to protect the wood.
Putting away tools in the newly covered space.
Traditional IHOP post-construction meal.
Saturday
On the drive home last night, we passed through forty miles of torrential rain. On the drive up this morning, what's that white stuff? Winter is here!
Today's work is the "car decking" (2x6 tongue-and-groove) floor that goes over the entry way and the balcony.
First we had to finish fastening the blocking from below, and power-planing them down to the level of the adjacent beams. Then we splashed some more varnish on them (which always invites the rain). It rained a lot today; everything was pretty wet.
Then we started fitting the first pieces of flooring into place. These are a challenge because we didn't do a great job getting the beams and rims lined up perfectly, so I had to rip a rabbet and artisinally rout little slots for where the brackets poked up too high.
Sweeping router shavings and rain off the surface.
Laying down some glue for the first course of wood.
By dusk, we had the first two courses installed. Don't worry: these were the difficult ones. The other twenty-seven courses should go much faster tomorrow. 😓
Sunday
Eliot drove twenty screws into the blocking that needed to be there before the floor reached them.
We laid a bit of plywood down as a temporary work surface.
The boards really did go in pretty fast today.
We were almost done at sunset.
Putting in the last few screws under the work lights.
Woo Whoot!!!
