Back at it

Eliot and I were back up at the cabin this weekend. We made and installed two more pieces of the tricky trim on the front of the house.



Getting these to fit right takes a surprising amount of test fitting and adjustment. There's getting the visible dimensions correct, then removing material on the back to clear various lumps from the nailing flanges. Then we use Bondo to fill gaps on the surface, sand, and prime the board. Finally, we have to mask the windows and caulk them on the way in.





We also installed ledger boards under all the doors; this is what the decks will mount to. These need metal flashing to keep water out of the gap between the board and the house.

We also worked on some of the electrical branch circuits.

Fitting the water heater to the wall in the closet. We have a 36kW tankless electric heater, which is basically a really big 1.6Ω resistor. Our electrician thinks it's ridiculous, and he's probably right.

All told for the weekend, we installed two pieces of trim, three ledger boards with flashing, and five electric cables for the water heater and dryer.

The final inspection was today. This guy is Levi, the county inspector, and as you can see, we passed! He only had two questions for me. One was about the energy efficiency credits and the blower door test, for which I had the compensating paperwork for the low-flow faucets already prepared. The second was asking for a smoke detector outside the bedroom; I pointed up and he saw that we already had one tucked into the alcove. And that was that! Odds and ends

I made progress on a bunch of little things today.  I painted a fencepost in 12" segments and pounded it in at the property line, where the outdoor camera can see it. Now we can measure the snow accumulation. I worked on finishing up almost-complete receptacle branch circuits. The first one I worked on was a little mystery: all the receptacles were installed, but the power didn't reach past a certain point in the line. After some investigation with a wire tracer and watching through the videos we took before covering the walls, I worked out what had happened: two receptacles shared a stud bay, facing into opposite rooms. The plan had been to bring power up to one box, jump over to the other box, and continue back down to the crawlspace to the next box. We forgot the jumper. I couldn't fish a wire between the boxes myself, so that repair waits. Upstairs, installing two receptacles completed the branch. Appliances and mirrors

In pursuit of being ready for final, I came up and installed the fridge and dishwasher with Jeff. We hung mirrors in the bathrooms.
